One of my sisters and I share the same biological parents. She has a rare autosomal recessive disease and I don't. I was just wondering, even if I don't have the disease could I have the defective gene? If so, could I pass on the defective gene to my children? How do I know if I have the defective gene?

long term use of zyrtec for eczema

My 20 month old son has severe eczema, and we've been giving him Zyrtec at night to help control his itching. It seems to work well, but I'd like to know if there are any complications in using Zyrtec continuously for a long period of time. He receives 1/2 tsp., once a day.

pain on right side of top of my head?

I recently had a cat scan on my sinuses and it came back clear.But however it feels as if i am having problems with sinuses.Pain & pressure and feeling like i can't breathe from nose even though nose is clear.I tilt head to one side and clear substance flows from nose.I get a dizzy feeling when i move my head certain ways or even just by moving my eyes.Now last night at work i had sharp pain on top of right side of my head.I try to rub pain away and find a knot on top of head and gently press on it and then i get a weird taste in mouth.Can it still be sinuses even though cat scan showed that it is ok?My right side of neck and shoulder aches too.Thought that i would toss that in too.Help would be appreciated for i can't miss any work not even a day :-)

Confused as to why I am spotting..

Okay, I am going to explain what has been happening since the end of August. August 30th I started my period and it was it's normal 5-6days, but then on the 18th-19th of September I spotted. My period was due on the 29th and it came on the 3rd of October. It was super heavy bleeding on the first night and second day with some blood clots. That period was the normal 5-6 days that I get. It ended on Oct. 6th.

Well, my deal is that now it is the 14th, and yesterday and today I have been having a little spotting. It is pink. It leaked on to a panty-liner yesterday, but I mostly noticed it when I went to wipe with tissue paper. Today I mostly see it just on the tissue paper. I would love to know what it could be. Please someone explain to me on why I would be spotting right now because I have been doing the ovulation tracking deals that I pee on and they say I am not ovulating.

FYI- my husband and I have been having unprotected sex for the past few months.

Chronic Dysuria = Kidney problem?

24 year old male

Current meds: Symbicort (asthma), Nexium (acid reflux), Lexapro (anxiety)

Starting in April, I had a acute onset of strange urinary symptoms, including burning while urinating, increased frequency of urinating, increased urgency to urinate. My mouth seemd dry as well. I thought maybe I had a kidney stone or some type of infection.

These symptoms lasted about 2 weeks. The urgency and frequency returned to normal; however, the pain during and after urination remained, and my urine seemed to always be a concentrated yellow color no matter how much a drank, and it was also foamy.

I informed my internist, who did a urinanalysis and kidney function blood work, both of which turned out normal. She referred me to a urologist.

The urologist also did a urinanalysis and performed an ultrasound of my bladder. The analysis was normal, and the ultrasound showed that I was emptying my bladder completely. He tried me on rounds of Ciprofloxacin and Doxycycline, neither of which helped. He then did cystoscopy and found no anatomical evidence of anything wrong with the urethra, prostate, or bladder. He told me this chronic dysuria is difficult to treat and that we would have to wait for something to get worse in order to tell us if anything is wrong. He gave me some samples of Utira-C to try, but this doesn't help much with the pain.

I am not sexually active and have never been. I'm not sure what is causing this. I'm worried about my kidneys/ureter system because of occassional dull lower back pain and because my urine is always yellow (as opposed to previously being almost always clear) no matter how much fluid I drink. Where do I go from here? Should I see a nephrologist or just wait and see what happens?

pain with medications

my father has a extremly bizzarre sympton when he takes certain medications and eats and drinks certain foods a few years ago my father had shoulder surgery and post op the doctors prescribed him vicodin for the pain and when he took one he said that it feels like his esophagus tightens up this also happens when he drinks coffee,takes vitamins,and eats bran based foods he has been to countless md's and none can diagnose him and i am getting a little concerened as he is getting on in age and what is going to happen when he needs to take painkillers?any help would be great thnaks in advance----D

Is Intestinal metaplasia and dysplasia a serious condition?

Dear Doctor:

Due to prolonged diarrhea my friend who is in India went through an Upper endoscopy and biopsy on September 1st 2009. As per the biopsy report "CHRONIC NON-SPECIFIC DUODENITIS and HELICOBACTOR ASSOCIATED CHRONIC GASTRITIS WITH PATCHY INTESTINAL METAPLASIA AND MILD DYSPLASIA". Due to this, he has already finished the triple therapy for H. Pylori. However this doctor was not happy with the pathologist's report and thus he wanted another pathologist to review the biopsy slides. When the second pathologist issued the results, the description was pretty much the same except for one main difference which was "No definite dysplasia seen, an occasional Helicobacter pylori like organism seen".

I was trying to seek some advise or opinion from a gastroenterologist or a knowledgable doctor who is here in the US. My questions are as follows:

1) His currently treating doctor said that intestinal metaplasia/with or without dysplasia might be a pre-malignant condition and thus he need follow ups. However when my friend seeked for a second opinion, another doctor said that the intestinal metaplasia/dysplasia is a normal thing and there is no need for any follow ups or further biopsies or even the need to take any proton pump inhibitor. What is your opinion or advise?

2) The first biopsy report indicating dysplasia along with the same biopsy showing a different result of him not having dysplasia is also indeed confusing. Does he need to do another biopsy soon in order to clarify whether he has intestinal dysplasia? Isn't it a risk to make assumptions since dysplasia is a pre-cancerous condition? Please advise what he needs to do?

3) Some doctors were of the opinion that Helicobactor associated chronic gastritis with patchy intestinal metaplasia and mild dysplasia might be precancerous whereas other doctors are of the opinion that this can be misleading and it might already be cancer. What is your opinion?

4) The current doctor asked him to take antacids for two weeks and then not to take it for another two weeks and then to return for follow up after 4 weeks. Is this the right type of treatment for him? Is surgery such as Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) needed to eradicate the condition of metaplasia/dysplasia?

My friend is totally confused. We need your guidance, esteemed opinion and advise, please.

3 weeks ago had my husband had his appendix removed , not laprascopic.(sp)
Having sharp pains that cut across abdomen and into groin. His dr. says its the healing process. Pain almost brings him to his knees. Seems to happen before bowel movement and sometimes in the middle of the night.Should he be more concerned or is this just the healing process. How long will this last. thank you.

Migraine

Hello, I'm new here. I'm a 33 yr old woman who has been suffering from migraines since I was 14 yrs old. But I have been getting a particular (new) type of migraine that is different from all of my other migraines and it hits me faithfully every 3 months. This has continually been going on for 4 yrs this November 2009.

I will either wake up with excruciating pain all over my head as if something is crushing my head with a vengeance or I will wake up with my body in extreme shock, i.e., from my skin to the center of my bones I am so sick and shakey and I am sweating profusely one minute and then the next I am shaking so bad because I am freezing and cannot get warmed up fast enough. During this time I am puking every 15 minutes for hours on end as if I have a poison deep inside the pit of my soul that if it does not come out with the last bit of stomach acid I will not stop wretching. It is so intense that I can almost say I know what a close encounter to death is.

People may say this sounds like an exaggeration but if they or anyone else were to experience what I do they would fear the "3 month mark" as I fear so emphatically. And every once in awhile one of these hideous migraines sneak themselves inbetween the 3 month mark, with which I'm thinking just to take a jab at me. I lose roughly 5 lbs during these episodes because of the amount of wretching that I do. I am unable to keep ANYTHING down AT ALL, not even medicine until around hour #10 or #12 so it causes me to become severely dehydrated. The few times I've been able to make it to the emergency room the different nurses were fearful of putting an I.V. in me because they didn't want to "collapse my veins". They eventually were able to find a vein that was well enough to pump alot of fluids and heavy medication into me that were equal to some level of morphine, I don't know. But whatever the case the pain is always so bad they have to give me double the dose, and two separate times.

I have no idea as to why my body goes into absolute shock from the very get-go. That is the 1st thing that wakes me up out of a dead sleep...usually around 1:30am, 2am, or 5am. They NEVER start during the day. It is ALWAYS in the middle of the night during sleep. I am either woke up with excruciating pain, or in complete shock. What type of a migraine could this possibly be? I've had an MRI on my brain but still have severe pain in my neck that shoots down into my spine and arm. I had a Nerve Conduction Study that came up normal. I don't know what to do. I'm very fearful of the next migraine because the last one was worse than the one before and so on. The next one I know, will be even worse. is there a blood clot trying to get loose somewhere in my body? I have pain in my calves at times and blurred vision everyday. I may seem paranoid but the pain is terrifying to me.

I hope there is someone who has some advice or at least knows someone who has a similar migraine and can explain to me what type this is and can give me an idea as to what triggers this monstrous evil. I hate it more than anything.

I was prescribed Clarithromycin (klacid) for a cough i developed lately but i seem to have hay fever symptoms as well. Can i take any antihistamine tablets whilst taking the antibiotics? Many thanks for your help

Half White & Reddish Pink Nails & Swelling

For 2 months now my fingernails have looked very strange. It is not my actual fingernail, but underneath the nail. I guess you could say the skin under the nail. My pinkie nails are almost all white and from my ring finger to my thumb they are half white half reddish pink. (white at the top and pink towards the cuticle) And for the past month my fingers and feet both swell at night. Once I wake up and get going the swelling seems to go down, but then the same thing happens again once I go to bed. Everything I have read online says this is NOT normal and I agree. I have seen 2 dermatologist... one said that I had Muehrcke Lines, which I looked up and my nails look nothing like that. And the other dermatologists said nothing was wrong. I also saw my GYN and she thought I might be low on Calcium and Vitamin D. However... I have had the following blood work completed that all came back normal, CMP, CBC, TSH, checked for Anemia, Vitamin D levels, and a Rheumatic profile. I just cannot figure out what is wrong with me... am I being paranoid or are my symptoms cause for concern? I am also still breastfeeding my 8 month old daughter... I am not sure if that would have anything to do with it. Should I seek more medical testing or a fourth opinion??? Thank you!

Shin Pain

Hi doctor,
I would like to like ask about this problem that i have been experiencing very often
when i go jogging.

The pain would occurs usually within 5mins after starting the jog.

Mostly it happens on the outside of my left shin, about halfway between the knee and the ankle.
I would feel an area pressure compressing on my shin, kinda like trying to bend
my shin inwards.

If i try to ignore it and continue running, the pressure/pain will become worse and worse.

The entire leg below the knee will feel very very heavy and painful and i will have to stop jogging.

It is very frustrating to have to stop like within 5min of starting the jog.

I would like to know what is the problem and how to cure it.
